The Expanded Programme on Immunisation (EPI-SA) has released the updated childhood immunisation schedule, effective from January 2024. This schedule outlines all essential vaccines children need from birth through 12 years of age. It includes protection against life-threatening diseases such as measles, polio, tuberculosis, hepatitis B, and pneumococcal infections.
Vaccines are administered at specific ages—starting at birth and continuing at 6 weeks, 10 weeks, 14 weeks, and throughout early childhood.
The schedule also highlights important guidelines, such as not administering the rotavirus vaccine after 24 weeks. Parents and caregivers are encouraged to follow this schedule closely to ensure full protection. Each vaccine is given at the appropriate clinic or healthcare facility by trained health professionals.
Immunisation remains one of the safest and most effective ways to protect children from preventable diseases. Staying up to date with the national schedule helps safeguard both children and communities. Together, we can ensure no child is left behind in receiving lifesaving vaccines.
